VTM-4 stands for Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel Drive, Honda’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which can distribute up to 70 percent of torque to the rear wheels, then split that torque between the left and right when needed. 

The VTM-4 system is controlled by an electronic unit that monitors wheel speed and throttle input. The reason that VTM-4 excels is when it is used in low-speed off-road conditions (under 15-20 mph), like mud or going up steep hills.

On 2006+ Pilot models, engine or emissions issues like the VCM system’s oil consumption will also activate the VTM-4 light in conjunction with a check engine light.

Here are the common causes to be aware of:

  • Low VTM-4 Fluid: It’s amazing how a leak and neglect can starve the rear differential of the fluid it requires (recommended to change it every 75k miles if using conventional oil).
  • Faulty wheel speed sensors: Damage or corrosion can misinterpret torque distribution.
  • Damaged wiring: Rodents or the wear of soy-based wiring insulation can break the wire connections.
  • Engine/emissions problems: Any problems that cause the engine to misfire or have a EVAP leak (for example, a P0507 code) will completely shut the system down.
  • Tire size/low or high tire pressures: Inconsistent tire signatures can confuse the system if the tires are significantly different sizes or pressures.

How to Fix VTM-4 Light on Honda Pilot

To identify VTM-4 light, follow these steps:

1. Inspect Tires

Compare the pressures to the placard, and look for signs of damage or tires that are different sizes.

2. Check VTM-4 Fluid

With the vehicle level and warm, check the level of the fluid. If the level is low, top up or replace.

3. Scan for OBD-II codes

Use a scanner to identify any codes, such as C003A (speed sensor) or P0442 (leak from the EVAP system).

4. Check wiring/sensors

Look for any wires that have been chewed through or any corrosion on the sensor terminals, clean or replace them if needed!

5. Test Drive

After you fix any issues in steps 2-4, go for a drive and see if the light clears; If not, reset it with a code reader.

6. Seek Professional Help

If you have done these steps and the warning light persists, have a mechanic check into any differential or module issues.

How to Turn VTM-4 Lock On or Off

Approach tough terrain with VTM-4 Lock pressed down. This sends the fixed amount of torque to the rear wheels. This is best for mud and lower speeds, not for regular road usage. 

To turn it off, press the VTM-4 Lock when you are no longer stuck. The VTM-4 Lock indicator light should only be on when the VTM-4 Lock is engaged. Honda built a manual lock to be used occasionally to help inform their automatic system.

Is it Bad To Drive with VTM-4 Light On?

A solid VTM-4 light indicates you can continue driving. Just know you have reduced traction! You may continue at normal speeds as long as you maintain normal driving conditions, but make plans for a repair soon. 

A flashing VTM-4 light says stop driving. You can try idling the engine in park to see if that resolves the flashing light, but if it persists, it is a good idea to have the vehicle towed. The rear differential could be damaged if you keep driving.

A Reddit user commented that they pulled over and restarted the engine when they saw the VTM light come on. The dashboard then suddenly showed the traction control light and the check engine light. 

After an inspection by a mechanic, there were four different misfires and they had to change the spark plugs to fix the issue.
