Honda has officially revived the Prelude, bringing back one of its most iconic nameplates as a hybrid performance coupe for the 2026 model year.
Phased out in 2001, the Prelude is returning in its sixth generation with a blend of electrified efficiency, Type R engineering, and a design that nods to its sporting legacy.
A Hybrid Powertrain with Performance Focus
The 2026 Honda Prelude pairs Honda’s two-motor hybrid-electric system with a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, producing a combined 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque . This setup is derived from the Civic Hybrid but tuned for performance driving. Instead of a traditional transmission, power is delivered through a direct-drive unit, giving the car quick response and smooth acceleration.
For the first time, Honda introduces S+ Shift mode, which simulates gear changes with paddle shifters, rev-matched downshifts, and enhanced engine sound, offering drivers a more connected experience .
Civic Type R Chassis Hardware
Performance credibility comes from borrowing hardware from the Civic Type R, including the dual-axis strut front suspension, adaptive dampers, and Brembo four-piston aluminum calipers finished in Prelude Blue .
The brakes use 13.8-inch ventilated front rotors and 12.0-inch rears, ensuring stopping power matches the coupe’s athletic handling. Honda has also tuned an enhanced Agile Handling Assist system, which integrates braking and power delivery for improved cornering .
Selectable drive modes: Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual, adjust steering response, damping, engine sound, and digital cluster layout for different driving conditions.
Design and Exterior
Designed in Japan, the Prelude takes on a low, wide stance with a sleek coupe silhouette. Signature elements include a double-bubble roof, full-width taillights, and flush door handles for a clean aerodynamic profile .
It rides on 19-inch Berlina Black wheels and will be available in five colors: Winter Frost Pearl, Boost Blue Pearl, Meteorite Gray Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, and Rally Red .
For personalization, Honda will offer Genuine Accessories, including a black decklid spoiler, underbody spoilers, and blacked-out emblems.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Prelude features a driver-focused cockpit with leather-trimmed front sport seats that include asymmetrical bolstering firm for the driver, wider and more relaxed for the passenger . The 2+2 seating layout provides 32 inches of rear legroom, and the hatchback design adds practical cargo space with split-folding rear seats.

Market Position and Availability
Honda is positioning the Prelude as a grand-touring hybrid sports coupe, aiming for driving engagement over raw straight-line speed. According to Honda, the Prelude was benchmarked against cars like the Porsche 718 Cayman in terms of handling agility, though at a more accessible price point .
The 2026 Prelude will be offered in a single, fully equipped trim, with pricing expected to start in the upper $30,000 range . U.S. and Canadian sales are scheduled to begin in late fall 2025 .
