Twenty years after the Bugatti Veyron first redefined the limits of speed and engineering, the automotive world is paying tribute to the car that once seemed impossible. At this year’s Bugatti Festival in Molsheim, the brand celebrated the Veyron’s 20th anniversary with parades, tours, and the unveiling of a special emblem dedicated to the milestone.
The Car That Changed Everything
When production began in 2005, the Veyron stunned the industry with a 1,001 PS (987 hp) quad-turbocharged W16 engine and a verified top speed of more than 400 km/h. These numbers weren’t just benchmarks, they were beyond what many thought feasible for a road car. Engineers faced repeated technical hurdles, from failing seals to driveshaft issues at high speeds, but under the relentless vision of Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Karl Piëch, the project was delivered.
Only 450 examples were produced, each costing Volkswagen Group millions in losses. Yet the Veyron was less about profit than prestige. As Bugatti itself puts it today, the hypercar embodied the fusion of Ettore Bugatti’s artistic brilliance and Piëch’s uncompromising drive for technical perfection.
Festival of Heritage and Innovation
The 2025 Bugatti Festival, organized by the Enthousiastes Bugatti Alsace (EBA), drew enthusiasts from across the globe from September 11–14. Veyron owners joined Le Petit Tour, a scenic drive through the Vosges mountains with stops at historic landmarks including Château du Haut-Barr and Villa René Lalique.
Back in Molsheim, the birthplace of the marque, crowds gathered in the Parc des Jésuites to see a lineup spanning Bugatti’s history from the legendary Type 59 to multiple examples of the Veyron itself. The weekend culminated in a parade through the town’s streets, a highlight of the 42nd running of the event.
To mark the anniversary, Bugatti also unveiled the official “20 Years of Veyron” logo, combining the French tricolore with Pierre Veyron’s signature—a nod to both national heritage and the racing spirit embodied by the car.
A Legacy That Endures
For Volkswagen, the Veyron was never about sales figures. Reports suggest the company lost millions on every unit built. Yet in doing so, it created a car that remains unmatched in significance.
“The Veyron was a milestone in automotive history, and twenty years later, it remains a symbol of our ambition,” said Hendrik Malinowski, Managing Director of Bugatti. “This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on how the Veyron not only redefined performance and luxury but also shaped the very identity of Bugatti. Its legacy continues to inspire every vehicle we create today.”
Once dismissed by some as too heavy or too clinical, the Veyron is now revered as a cultural icon. Its audacious engineering, improbable business case, and unmatched performance figures have secured its place in history.
Two decades on, the Veyron remains what Piëch intended it to be: not just the fastest car of its time, but a statement of possibility.
